Competition

I seem to have spent most of the weekend collecting items that will compete with my knitting time via two charity book sales and a car boot. Knitting has about halved the amount of books I've got read this year - I think they're staging a fight back!The knitting did get a look in though: I managed to find one bargain knitting book which seems good fun, a stack of murder mystery videos to provide something to knit to and some actual knitting in the form of Lady E.

I had meant to complete the legwarmers for my friend for Tuesday but forgot to bring the next ball of wool along for the ride. It's lucky these are a really quick knit as I don't want to gift them with the needles in as I do think that would detract from their snuggliness.

There is always such competition for the precious free time isn't there? I empathise with those of you that are too committed elsewhere at the moment to sign up for Pay it Forward, however I've only got two of my three peeps on board so far - Von and LittleLou. Anyone else game? I promise to make you something nice eventually ;0)

Nice job on the book sales! I can hardly resist book fairs/used book stores either, and I think books are the thing that have the most other "stash" competition for my yarn ;)

I buy books and never gat round to reading them! I buy books that I think I "ought" to read rather than want to, that might be the problem!

Books are as addictive as yarn! I have trouble parting with them after they've been read, and like glenna c, are in stash competition with the yarn!

Ooh, love the books! I have so many shelves of them - knitting has definitely cut into my reading, but I try to find a balance.

I think you were right about the leg warmers...gifting them with needles still attached might have been just a tad prickly!

My reading output has taken a bit of a knock since I started knitting. I try to read for at least 30 mins before I go to bed though. And I find that audio books are great - books and knitting together. Our local library has quite a good selection.

Whilst admiring Bells beautiful steeked jacket the other day I found myself agreeing wholeheartedly with her suggestion of knitting as a metaphor for life and mentioned my little "as in knitting, as in life" mantra I'm often mumbling. You know how it goes - the pattern/recipe you modify without noting down the changes = a hard to replicate FO/dish. As in knitting, as in life. Ways I keep together

I feel like this world breaks my heart about a hundred different ways every week at the moment. The horrors we witness, and then up through the cracks of the latest tragedy, the tender shoots, the beautiful ways humans reach out to one another to help each other tentatively move forward again. Those of us still blessed or cursed or blessed to be here. I hear an internal narrative that says it's all too much for me to take in. I am challenging that, staying present for the reality of it, mindfully, finding personal stories behind platitudes and headlines, understanding more about how we all process and grieve and flail. I look for the moon. I knit. I think about the equinox. I stop and smell primroses. I say thank you to my toes. First Stutterings

At the end of January I had the pleasure of taking a learn to crochet course at The Makery in Bath taught by the very patient and adept Rosee Woodland .  Here is my first ever piece of crochet. Hard won over an hour or so. Rather tight and twisty. I thought it would be, as that aptly describes my first pieces of knitting. The focus and anxiety to get it right flow through my hands and translate into tightly wound stitches. I seem less patient with myself than I was when I learnt to knit as if somehow because I can do the one I should be able to do the other. I was no natural knitter but because it it flows now I think other crafts should feel the same. That belief certainly sabotaged my attempts to learn from a book which worked for me with knitting; with crochet I felt like I should be able to skip through that beginning section and get straight into the 'real' stuff and when I couldn't get it easily I didn't want to persevere.
